Woman dies after being found inside Toronto clothing donation bin

Posted January 11, 2019

The department received a call around 1:40 a.m. and arrived to find the woman "injured and unconscious", according to a tweet by the Toronto Police Operations Centre.

It is unclear how the woman, who is in her 30s, became trapped inside the bin.

This unfortunate event comes just a week after a 34-year-old man died after somehow becoming trapped inside the entrance of a clothing donation bin near the entry of Ambleside Park in Vancouver.

He said the manufacturers of these types of bins - and there are at least nine or 10 different versions in Canada - most likely didn't account for desperate people trying to get inside of them when they were designed. RangeView Fabricating, a Toronto-based company that has manufactured some of the bins involved in fatal incidents, said Tuesday that its bins have operated without incident for most of the 25 years that they've been in operation. Many of people who volunteered to design a retrofit solution are students and they deserve to be paid, he explained.

Diabetes Canada announced last week it is retrofitting all its clothing-donation bins to prevent death or injury in cases of misuse.

The hatches on the bins are created to keep thieves out, but they can also trap people climbing inside.

Toronto Police Const. Genifferjit Sidhu said that deaths such as these can be horrific. "That would be painful, and it would not be quick".

In the last four years, British Columbia has seen five people die after becoming stuck in the bins.

In July 2017, after a man in his mid-20s died in a Calgary donation bin, a representative with the Cerebral Palsy Association in Alberta told Global News that they had noticed a rise in bin thefts. Once again, the man was found lodged in the charity donation bin and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Diabetes Canada announced the move last week and said Tuesday that about 4,000 bins are being retrofitted or modified across the country, with the changes expected to be completed by January 18.

Tory said the review will also address whether the boxes are placed in proper locations and if they are the best way to go about collecting used clothing in the first place.

"We are continuing to allow those bins because that site is fully staffed and after hours they are locked up and secure", he said, adding that the city bins are the "mailbox" style and considered a bit safer.
