"That is the will of a kid to survive", Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said at a press conference Friday.

An alert stated that she was taken from her home by "unknown individual (s), likely with a gun".

Jake Patterson, 21, was arrested and is expected to be charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of kidnapping, police said.

According to authorities, Jayme was hospitalized after being rescued but is now out of the hospital. As of 4 p.m. Friday, she had been reunited with some of her family, with more reunions to follow.

"She knocked on our door", Kristin Kasinskas told CNN, "and helped Jayme into the room, and said, 'This is Jayme Closs, call 911 right now'".

The town of Gordon was not on authorities' radar in the search for Jayme, he said.

A 21-year-old Wisconsin man has been charged with the kidnapping of 13-year-old Jayme Closs and the murder of her parents, authorities said on Friday, a day after the girl escaped following three months of captivity. Only then did the girl reveal her name.

Fitzgerald said it appears Patterson targeted Jayme and killed her parents in order to abduct her. He said investigators believe Patterson killed Jayme's parents because he wanted to abduct her, and that Patterson "planned his actions and took many steps to hide his identity".

Detectives pursued thousands of tips, watched dozens of surveillance videos and conducted numerous searches in the effort to find Jayme.

Kasinskas said she taught Patterson science in middle school, but added: "I don't really remember a ton about him".

But Kasinskas said Jayme told her she had been held in the Gordon area - near Kasinskas' home - by someone who killed her parents on the night she disappeared. He said that he did not know if Jayme had been physically abused but that she was hospitalized overnight for observation and cleared and released after a checkup. The "unusual" call had no communication from the caller, just yelling and a cry for help in the background, police said according to NBC News.

"I thought, 'Good for her she escaped, ' " he said.

Smith says she was given no other details about the case, other than being told a suspect was in custody.

A suspect was taken into custody shortly after Jayme was found, authorities said.
