Storm Erik set to lash United Kingdom with gusts of up to 70mph

The first storm of 2019 is to whip across Britain on Friday, bringing with it winds of up to 60mph and weather warnings.

A woman in her 20s also had to be cut from her Hyundai I20 by firefighters and has been taken to hospital in Plymouth for treatment to minor injuries, the Telegraph's website reports.

Police closed the road in both directions as they praised a quick-thinking HGV driver who blocked off the carriageway with his vehicle to stop others from crashing into the giant oak.

The warning for heavy rain is in place over the western and Highlands areas up until Saturday afternoon.

The ESB has said that around 2,500 customers across the country are without power because of the storm.

"But Erik could bring the possibility of 70mph gusts along more exposed coasts".
