Indonesia yesterday joined a growing chorus of criticism led by a handful of Gulf states against the Trump administration's decision to recognise Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights. It added in a statement that the decision does not change the fact that the Golan Heights "is Arab and Syrian occupied land".

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait criticized the move by President Donald Trump to recognize Israel's 1981 annexation, and said the territory was occupied Arab land.

This represents the height of arrogance and flouting of global law.

Eric Goldstein, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch, said Trump seems to want to "drive a wrecking ball" through global law that protects the people who live in "occupied Golan Heights".

The Shebaa Farms - known in Hebrew as Mount Dov - is a small patch of land captured by Israel from Syria in 1967. Major US allies such as France, Germany and the United Kingdom have also refused to back the country's U-turn in its policy toward the Golan, as it goes against a UN Security Council resolution.

On Monday, Trump signed a proclamation in which the United States recognized the strategic plateau as Israeli territory, breaking with decades of U.S. policy. "Canada's long-standing position remains unchanged", Global Affairs Canada said in a statement.

"Your proclamation comes at a time when the Golan is more important than ever for our security when Iran is trying to establish bases in Syria to strike at Israel", said Netanyahu.

The minister stressed that Damascus would not give up its right regain control of all territories belonging to Syria, and the Golan Heights was no exception.

Another point is that US recognition sends a clear and direct message to the Arab world.

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah - here in February 2019 - said the USA president's decision on the Golan Heights "deals a knockout punch" to the peace process in the region.

Israel occupied the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War.
