FAA acting administrator Dan Elwell said Wing had already conducted successful trials of its delivery service in Virginia.

The world's first commercial drone delivery service has been launched in Australia, after years of test flights.

How it works: Wing has partnered with 12 local businesses to deliver their products to customers nearby "in minutes".

Amazon's debut Australian delivery comes days after a video claiming to show the company operating a giant blimp to deploy drones went viral on social media.

They will not be allowed to fly over crowds or main roads.

In response, Wing said it had developed a quieter drone.

Wing adds on its website that the drones have been created to produce significantly less Carbon dioxide than a truck making equivalent deliveries whilst ensuring they operate quietly to minimise noise disruption.

And Wing's drones also have to obey a curfew, as they are only allowed to fly between 7am and 8pm on Monday to Friday.

It remains to be seen how local residents will react to the drones flying over their neighbourhoods.

"We're excited to connect with more local businesses in the area about how we can help them reach more customers faster, safer and more sustainably", Project Wing said in a media release.

Google's Wing unit is not alone is trying to make drone deliveries a reality.
