Damage was still being assessed, but residents posted photos on social of media showing cracked walls and light fixtures swinging in the moments after the quake. A Porac councilor told The Associated Press another victim was expected to be pulled out alive soon.

However, some officials reported damage to a church in northern Pampanga province and said boulders rolled down a mountain, blocking a highway.

Of the 16 reported dead, five were from the collapsed Chuzon Supermarket in Porac, seven from different barangays in the town, two in Lubao, one in Angeles City, and one in San Marcelino, Zambales.

The quake struck 60 kilometres northwest of the capital, at a depth of 40km, according to the US Geological Survey.

QUAKE SCENES. A building in Porac, Pampanga lies in shambles, crushing the vehicles parked in front of it following the Magnitude 6.1 natural disaster on Monday afternoon. A 6.1-magnitude quake occurred on 22 April in the Philippine region of Luzon with an epicenter located northeast of Zambales province, according to data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Of the recorded aftershocks, 62 were plotted and only eight were felt, ranging between magnitudes 1.4 and 3.4 and intensities 1 and 3.
