Here's Why Amazon's New 1-Day Free Shipping Plan Really Matters

Posted April 27, 2019

"We're now working on evolving our Prime free two-day shipping program to be a free one-day shipping program", Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky said in the company's quarterly investor relations call.

Currently, Amazon's annual subscription service qualifies you to free two-day shipping with most products, and only when you order items totaling more than $35 do you receive free one-day shipping.

By building out the logistics capacity to support one-day shipping, Amazon may not only be able to justify raising the cost of Prime again in the future, but also expand the types of products consumers are comfortable ordering online.

Its cloud computing business, which powers the video-streaming site Netflix, digital scrapbooking site Pinterest and many other companies, saw its revenue soar 41 per cent from a year ago.

Overall, Amazon reported net income of US$3.56 billion (NZ$5.36 billion), or US$7.09 per share, for the first three months of the year.

'Gunmen who killed 14 members of Pakistani security forces based in Iran'
The anti-security moves at the frontiers of Iran and Pakistan seek to hurt the friendly relations between the two countries. Pakistan's foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the new separatist group had camps inside Iranian border areas.

Both retailers have struggled to morph supply lines built for stocking stores into systems that can also handle large numbers of individual customers' orders.

For now, it isn't clear when Amazon will complete the transition to the faster delivery time.

Amazon executives discussed the "slowdown" in advertising growth during the earnings call with Wall Street analysts.

Amazon's first-quarter net income more than doubled to $3.6 billion, while analysts were only expecting $2.4 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

Amazon said it employed more than 630,000 workers during the first quarter, a 12 per cent increase from the year before. Revenue barely beat expectations in the first quarter, through it grew at a healthy 17 percent year-over-year clip to $59.7 billion. Amazon will take multiple quarters to roll it out across the United States.

In the past the United Arab Emirates and Egypt have supported Haftar with air strikes during campaigns to take eastern Libya. World Health Organization said on Wednesday it would send medical staff to treat the wounded, whose number has reached 913.

The company is delving into even less familiar terrain, too. Amazon will reveal more details about this plan in Q2.

In China, where the company had long struggled to compete with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, Amazon said this month it would close warehouses and its domestic marketplace in July.

As the company has grown, it has become a clearinghouse for smaller businesses.

The one-day shipping goal won't just be through Amazon's delivery service, but also through partners like UPS, FedEX and the US Postal Service.
