On campaign trail, 2020 Democrats appeal to working class

Former Veep Joe Biden kicked off campaigning today, after teeing up his 2020 race last week with a candidacy announcement video blasting President Donald Trump for his "very fine people on both sides" of the issue at the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville.

To push back on the endorsement, Trump retweeted about 60 Twitter users in less than an hour who said they supported him over Biden.

The retweets highlighted support from purported firefighters who claim that they support Trump, not Biden, despite the endorsement of the International Association of Fire Fighters, which threw its support behind Biden on Monday.

"I'll never get the support of Dues Crazy union leadership, those people who rip-off their membership with ridiculously high dues, medical and other expenses while being paid a fortune", Trump wrote on Twitter, criticizing Biden.

Trump was responding to news that the largest firefighters union in America had formally endorsed Biden for 2020.

"We're also responsible to make sure that, quite frankly, the nominee isn't a nominee that is gonna take the party off the left cliff", he said. One read: "Sleepy Joe Biden is having his first rally in the Great State of Pennsylvania".

Most of the replies reassured the president that firefighters support him over Biden.

While campaign aides and media commentators portrayed his embrace of the unions at a rally in a former steel town as an appeal for the support of blue-collar workers, the reality is that Biden was hailing organizations that are widely hated in the working class because of decades of sellouts and betrayals, in which millions of workers have seen their jobs, wages, benefits and pensions destroyed with the collusion of the unions. "But the members love Trump".
